Qatar Joins 113th Session of OPCW Executive Council
Qatar attended the 113th Session of the Executive Council of Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), at The Hague from 6 to 9 October 2026. The Qatari delegation talked with the participants about chemical disarmament, implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and international cooperation on chemical safety & security.
Qatar Reaffirms Opposition to Chemical Weapons
In the session, Qatar once again emphatically condemned the use of chemical weapons by ‘any person in the world under any circumstances’. The delegation recalled the necessity of civilian protection and the preservation of vital infrastructure and that challenges arising from the use of chemicals must be reported through the known procedures and mechanisms of the Chemical Weapons Convention and through reliable technical evidence.
Focus on Emerging Technologies and Security
Qatar also spoke about emerging technologies, including AI, presenting potential risks associated with its potential use for the manufacture of such toxic or “dual” products. Meanwhile, the delegation backed responsible application of new technologies for verification and capacity-building and the enhancement of international actions to prevent chemical weapons’ re-emergence.
Promoting Cooperation and Peaceful Chemistry
The Qatari delegation emphasized the need to prepare for chemical incidents through international cooperation, combat chemical terrorism and build up technical capabilities. Qatar’s prime involvement in contributing to peaceful applications of chemistry under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) also emphasized the significance of scientific cooperation and capacity building in global security and sustainable development.
