Qatar and Turkey among seven nations bidding to host the 2036 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Wednesday 30 that seven countries have so far gobbled up bids to host the 2036 Olympics: Australia, China, France, India, Japan, Qatar, and Turkey. The countries are currently engaged in talks with the IOC in the pre-selection phase for the host selection.

Seven Nations Enter 2036 Olympics Race

The 7 countries in the race of 2036 Olympics are Qatar, Turkey, India, Germany, South Korea, South Africa and Hungary. As part of the new selection framework, the IOC is taking a fresh look at their early projects in the process of the Future Host Commission.

Qatar would like to capitalise on its hosting experience for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, while Turkey has been making an Olympic bid for five years.

Countries Bring Different Hosting Experience

India is aiming to be the host of its first-ever Olympic Games and Ahmedabad is the centre of the push for the city. It’s also a very historic chance for South Africa to host the Olympics for the first time in its history on the continent.

Since 1972, Germany has been hoping for its second Olympic Games. South Korea is also the host country of the Summer Olympics 1988 in Seoul, the Winter Olympics 2018 in Pyeongchang and is now hosting the Winter Olympics 2022 in Chonju.

IOC Selection Process Enters New Stage

The new bidding process of the IOC features a so-called strategic dialogue period. In November 2026, the seven countries are to submit their first project virtually, and by March 2027, feasibility studies and a short list will be available.

The preferred hosts are anticipated to be named in December of 2028 and the final decision on the host country for the 2036 Olympics Games will be made in mid-2029. The IOC has said that it may go further with more than one preferred host.

Qatar Eyes Olympic 2026

Confidence in the new headquarters, Qatar’s successful host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, could give it new experience in hosting the world’s largest multi-sport event. The 2028 Games will be hosted by Los Angeles and 2032 in Brisbane.
