The period of official national mourning in Qatar will end shortly on 25th June. Qatar Museums has initiated a social program for the people of Qatar, the residents and international tourists that allows everyone to pay their respects to the late His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father of the Nation of Qatar. On July 12th, 2026, Father Amir passed away at the age of 74, having left behind a remarkable legacy that transformed Qatar into a global cultural and educational destination.

Official condolence books are now being displayed in four of the State’s main museums, as a tribute to his contribution to the developmental progress of the country. The initiative offers a substantive way for the public to give their thanks, memory and respect, and also to reflect on the enduring contribution of Father Amir to the country’s history.

Why the Condolence Books Have Been Opened?

Father Amir was big in establishing the modern kingdom of Qatar, especially in education, culture, preserving the heritage and in the field of international diplomacy. During his tenure, Qatar’s major institutions like Qatar Museums grew to become world centres for art and cultural exchange, helping give Qatar a world-class reputation.

The condolence books provide the opportunity to write the visitor’s message and to pay homage to the vision that has led to the creation of many of Qatar’s world famous museums and cultural structures.

Four Active Condolence Book Venues

During the museums’ normal hours of operation, visitors will be able to place an official condolence in the appropriate condolence books at any of the following locations:

1. Museum of Islamic Art (MIA)

The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, housed on one of the city’s most well-known landmarks housing the Corniche, is still one of the most recognizable sights in the city. The condolence book is available to visitors and there is also a wonderful collection of Islamic art, one of the finest in the world.

2. National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ)

The National Museum of Qatar by world renowned architect Jean Nouvel is about the story of Qatar’s identity and its history. In the museum a condolence book is on hand for leaving remarks of remembrance.

3. Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art

Situated in Education City, Mathaf celebrates modern and contemporary Arab art. The museum is now another place for the public to pay respect to the cultural heritage of Father Amir.

4. 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum

Located beside Khalifa International Stadium, the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum is the fourth designated venue. Visitors can sign the condolence book either before or after visiting the interactive exhibits in the museum.

Visiting Hours and Access

The condolence books will be open during the time of use of each museum and will be kept open until further notice, Qatar Museums tells visitors.

When visiting, people should check each museum’s official hours, as they can be different on weekends or during holidays.

A Nation Joining in Tribute

These condolence books are opened after an emotional time of National unity. Leaders from across the world, diplomats and thousands of citizens joined each other at Lusail palace to express condolences to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during the official period of mourning.

Museums and other cultural institutions closed their doors for a while and opened again on July 17. Today, the condolence initiative opens up to the general community so that it is everyone’s right to honor the extraordinary contributions of Father Amir.
