UAE Saudi rail integration

The UAE and Saudi Arabia are developing joint rail plans to boost the cross-border connectivity infrastructure, and connectivity through the rail system is expected to play a key role in regional integration.

Under the framework, the booking system is connected with the Saudi Arabia network as part of the much larger GCC railway transport vision. Logistics and energy infrastructure are also tackled and serve a long-term more resilient regional supply chain in cooperation.

Rail Connectivity and Freight Movement

The proposed connection’s purpose is to facilitate freight transport in an effort to move away from the need for long-distance trucking transportation. Plans are addressing transit of goods across the border and co-ordinated logistical operations. The efficiency of the transport of industrial material, parts for manufacturing and consumer goods by rail freight could be optimized.

Border Links and Technical Standards

In the Al Dhafra area of the UAE, the site of Ghuweifat is designated as an important transportation route on the way to Batha in Saudi Arabia, which further branches to Haradh and Hofuf. There’s also a concept for digital customs procedures and compatible railways. The information supplied references a standard for interoperability: European Train Control System Level 2.

Energy Cooperation and Regional Impact

Under the framework, there will be enhanced electricity-grid linkages and cross-border electricity trade. The wider GCC Railway is said to be a 2,177-kilometre, estimated $250-billion infrastructure project that will be completed in a state-wide operating Network by 2,030. The figures do not just refer to the bilateral link but rather to the regional programme.

Expected Benefits and Next Steps

It has been estimated that freight rail will reduce emissions per tonne by 70 to 80 percent compared to heavy road transport. The speeds of up to 200 kph and time of four-five hours between Abu Dhabi or Dubai and Riyadh are also estimated. These benefits would take the time of trial freight operations and of progressive implementation.
