riyadh and abha airport attacks

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said that three people were killed and 36 others injured in separate attacks on Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport, in Riyadh.

The attacks were carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday and as a result emergency response measures took place at both airports. Procedures went into effect to ensure the safety of people including injured passengers and residents were rushed to hospital for care, authorities said.

Two women, one Moroccan and the other Algerian, were killed in the attack on Abha International Airport Tuesday. In all there were 28 injured, from serious injuries to minor ones.

Said to be injured were Saudi citizens and foreign residents. Nationals identified among them were from Bangladesh and the Philippines. Emergency teams acted at the airport and took those that were affected to medical facilities.

On Wednesday, one Sudanese citizen was killed and eight were injured after an attack on King Khalid International Airport, located in Riyadh. Five Saudi citizens, two residents of Egypt and one of Pakistan, were wounded.

GACA reported minor to serious injuries. Damage was also caused during the attacks, which led to calls from authorities to evaluate targeted facilities and determine their “safe condition”.

According to the Houthis, who have repeatedly been accused of attacks against Saudi Arabia, ballistic missiles and drones were employed during the strikes. The group connected the strikes to the coalition raids on Sanaa international airport in recent days.

Saudi-led anti-Iran coalition forces have shot down a ballistic missile over northwest of Riyadh. Defence Minister John Purtov further reported that coalition forces also launched over 80 air attacks on Houthis military units in Yemen, including drone launch sites and command buildings/missile storage facilities.

The group took care of coordination with the concerned so as to safeguard the passengers and ensure the safety of civil aviation operations, GACA said. The escalation also led to a security alert from the U.S. Embassy regarding potential flight cancellations, closures in airspace, and travel disruption.
