meteor showers to eclipses

Astronomers can expect some interesting activities in the Kuwait night sky over the coming days as several meteor showers, even planetary alignment with the Moon can occur. Numerous events were highlighted by the Al-Ujairi Scientific Center and in addition there is some guidance for observing these events in the international astronomy calendars to make the month of October more interesting for observation.

1. Saturn at Opposition – October 4

On October 4th Saturn is moving into opposition (an opposition occurs when this planet is facing the Sun from the opposite side of the sky than the Earth). This makes it so well suited to be observed, as it can be seen from sun-down until nightfall.

2. Moon and Mars Encounter – October 5

The Moon will be near Mars before dawn on October 5. It will be easy to see these two objects close together when viewed from Kuwait without specialized equipment.

3. Draconid Meteor Shower – October 8–9

Draconid meteor shower peaks on Oct. 8 and 9. Relatively dark skies should further aid in spotting meteors after dark early this year around the October 10 New Moon, where darkness is judged near the time of the Moon’s New Moon.

4. New Moon – October 10

The evening sky will be mostly moonless for the next few days with the New Moon on the 10th. This provides favorable conditions for seeing fainter stars/elements of deep sky objects from sites remote from the urban lights of the city of Kuwait.

5. Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation – October 12

The maximum east elongation of Mercury will be 19.7° on October 12. This evening, the planet will be even further from the sun, and will give observers a chance to look around for the elusive planet shortly after dark falls.

6. Orionid Meteor Shower – October 21–22

The Orionids are a swarm of dust particles left behind by Halley’s Comet that will reach peak numbers on October 21–22. The shower is considered active from October 2 to November 7, with the darkest nights providing the best viewing opportunities for the fast-moving all the way from NASA.

7. Moon and Saturn – October 24

October 24 is a close approach between the Moon and Saturn. This will make it relatively easy to find Saturn with the Moon as a visual guide. The pair should be visible in the evening sky of Kuwait.

8. Hunter’s Moon – October 26

The Full Moon (traditionally the Hunter’s Moon) in October is on October 26. According to the lunar calendar, it is the Full Moon in Kuwait at 7:11 a.m. local time and the Moon will be Full around the nights surrounding it.

9. Moon Near the Pleiades – October 28

The Moon will pass close to the star cluster Pleiades on 28th October. In the night sky, away from bright city lights, it’s possible to spot the summer exclusive area close to the Moon.

Best Tips for Kuwait Stargazers

As a rule of thumb, the best viewing areas are those far from city lights, give your eyes some time to adapt to darkness, and, before heading outside, consult the forecast. It is best to view meteor showers with no obstructions to the sky.
