kuwait withdraws citizenship

Authorities in Kuwait are conducting a wide sweep of nationality files under the nation’s new laws and have revoked the citizenship of 415 people in six official decrees.

The measures are similar to those of the Supreme Committee for Nationality, which has been reviewing cases of alleged violations related to fraudulent citizenship acquisition, falsified documents, unlawful naturalization and dual citizenship.

These new orders are another powerful blow for Kuwait’s bank clearance of its national records and citizenship distribution in compliance with the laws.

On information that has been provided to the authorities on the government’s review process it is noted that errors occurred with identity data, forged documentation and the concealment of earlier citizenship. The decisions are being followed by the concerned articles in the Nationality Law of Kuwait.

The government has stressed that the integrity of the nationality system must be preserved because of its broader significance in the areas of national security, public administration and distribution of state benefits.

Citizenship reviews are not a one-off. Other nationality papers are “likely” to continue to be considered by officials as they look into the rest of the volume and try to determine if there are other papers that do not meet the criteria.

The move is implementing Kuwait’s growing measures for supervision of nationality and civil registry management. The government is indicating that it will continue to review nationality documents as part of the practice of checking the legality of nationwide laws and institutions, as it has done in six previous citizenship decrees, which have removed 415 citizenships.
