On 8 October 2026, UAE President held talks with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow on ways to further develop economic and development cooperation between the two countries.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the current situation in the Middle East and its impact on stability and security in the region, the statement said.

The meeting followed a high-level meeting with officials from the UAE, based in Abu Dhabi, on 24/10, in the UAE, during President Al-Sharaa’s working visit to the country in September, during his participation in the 24th Arab Media Summit in Dubai.

The two countries are progressing to strengthen cooperation in various strategic fields. In a recent preliminary agreement with Syria’s central bank, the UAE’s Central Bank discussed payment systems, monetary policy, cash management and financial technology.

The aim of the framework is to enhance technical skills and contribute to increased financial strength. The agreement on the banking cooperation follows the two sides’ efforts to deepen economic ties and to foster Syria’s development.

Other opportunities for partnerships are also becoming apparent, such as for investment and infrastructure. The Syrian government has signed a framework agreement with Abu Dhabi-based developer Eagle Hills on vast residential and tourism investments to come to Damascus and Latakia, which will create over 40,000 jobs.

A UAE economic team has also reached Syria to determine the strategic projects, which can help in boosting the country’s economic recovery. The ties are increasing in cultural and sporting aspects; the UAE President’s Cup for Purebred Arabian Horses was held at Latakia Racecourse this last year, in a joint event with colleagues from Syria.
