UAE Sets Minimum Age for Social Media at 15: What Parents and Teens Need to Know About the New Rules and Fines
The UAE has taken a significant move for further strengthening the protection of children online by officially introducing a nationwide minimum of 15 years of age for creating and operating personal social media pages. The decision by the UAE Cabinet led by His Highness marks the UAE’s entry into the digital protection of children.
The new framework aims to tackle the increasing concerns with internet safety, cyberbullying, digital addiction, exposure to inappropriate content and privacy issues that children encounter online.
Why the UAE Introduced the New Social Media Age Limit?
For children and youth, digital platforms are a key piece in daily life. But worries have increased around the globe about the dangers of extensive usage of social media at a young age. Now, governments in several nations are considering measures to safeguard young users from negative experiences in this online world.
The UAE’s new policy will help to bring social networks to life for the younger generation in a safer and more suitable environment for them to participate responsibly online. The ruling also comes amid a wider campaign to bolster families’ digital well-being and the protection of their cybersecurity.
What the New Law Means for Children Under 15?
The new rules will prevent kids under 15 years old creating, accessing and using personal social media accounts. The ban is not limited to specific platforms – it covers the big ones, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube and other apps that are currently operating in the UAE.
The rules cover more than just prohibition of account creation. Children younger than 15 will also not have access to the main social networking activities including public postings, user comments, sharing of content, public group participation and access to any public online community. The aim is to limit exposure to risks in online environments and promote safer behaviors online during youth.
New Protections for Teens Aged 15 and 16
Persons aged 15 and 16 will still be allowed to receive social media, but their accounts will be a special protected category. These accounts will automatically be subject to strengthened safety features by the social media platforms.
These protections should include blocking out-direct communication with strangers, more privacy options, less targeted ads and in-built screen time controls. To give young people the opportunity to join in online and reduce risks of overusing, exploiting or interacting with others.
Who Faces Fines Under the New Rules?
A major misunderstanding about the announcement is that when parents are notified that their kids are using social media before the age of 15, they will be charged a monetary fine. The UAE authorities have provided otherwise, as outlined in the framework.
It’s on social platforms and tech companies. Failure to have proper age verification protocols in place and permitting minors to utilize a business’ services could result in serious regulatory repercussions. Such penalties may have very high repercussions reaching millions of dirhams or even in serious cases, limitation and suspension of platforms’ operation in UAE.
While parents’ responsibilities to supervise and regulate their children’s online behavior are not limited by the law, parents are not explicitly subject to financial sanctions if their children try to circumvent age restrictions.
Parental Consent Is No Longer an Exception
One of the major changes in the new regulations is the elimination of the legal loophole of parental consent. Some parents used to think it was okay to give permission to children to sign up on social media websites, if they were younger.
The new scheme eliminates the concept of a minimum age being waived by parent consent. For children, personal social media accounts will be considered legally not feasible until age 15, even if approved or supervised by their parents.
How the UAE Will Enforce the New Rules?
The government has given tech companies a year to work towards compliance, until June 2027. This is when user verification systems will be expected to get a whole lot better on platforms.
Future verification systems could feature advanced AI capabilities, more robust identity verification, and, potentially, secure identity platforms like UAE Pass. Reliance on simply declared birth dates, rather than other types of evidence, is likely to be insufficient in determining one’s Age.
