Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye Activate Makkah Defence Pact to Deploy Forces
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye have agreed to activate the collective defence mechanisms of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, paving the way for the deployment of allied military forces and capabilities to Saudi Arabia.
The decision came after an emergency meeting of the alliance’s Strategic-Political and Defence Committee in Riyadh in which the two ministers of defence and foreign affairs spoke about the growing security threats facing the region and cross-border attacks in recent days.
The pact, which is in the final stages, provides for an armed attack against one member being considered as an attack against all three. The new resolution steps up the pact from a strategic concept to a closer coordination and realization of military measures.
As expected, the outcome of the meeting stipulated the coordination of the supply of the air and land capabilities, as well as of the military forces that will be sent for rapid deployment and integration within the interior of Saudi territory.
The transport is a major step towards regional security cooperation, fostering closer integration between strategic assets on the Gulf and South Asian sides and establishing a formal collective deterrence mechanism between the two.
The officials expressed the importance of defending the territorial integrity, national security and critical infrastructure of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and tackling incipient threats posed today.
The activation will likely further strengthen cooperation between Riyadh, Islamabad and Ankara militaries and might alter the regional security dynamics.
