Held in the Saudi port city of Jeddah on Sunday and Monday, the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) mega auction has broken the record for the highest amount spent in an IPL auction to date. The 10 franchises spent Rs 639.15 crores on 182 players.
62 overseas players have been bought. Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant is the most expensive player in IPL history, acquired for Rs 27 crores by LSG. Punjab Kings earlier shelled out Rs 26.75 crores for Shreyas Iyer of the Indian cricket team.
The IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah proved to be an opportunity for the 10 IPL teams to build the core of their squads for the next three seasons. Held once every three years, the mega auction lets teams start afresh if they feel the need to.
The 10 franchises gathered in Jeddah to select the best players from a pool of 577 cricketers, including 367 Indians and 210 overseas players. Each team had a total budget of Rs 120 crores to build a squad of a minimum of 18 players and a maximum of 25 players.
In the IPL 2025 auction, English cricketer Jos Buttler is the most expensive overseas player, acquired by Rs 15.75 crores to Gujarat Titans. Rasikh Dar is the most expensive uncapped player, acquired by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for Rs 6 crores.
