Visit Qatar Locks in ONE Championship Through 2029: What It Means for Gulf Sports Tourism

The partnership between Visit Qatar and ONE Championship extends beyond any mere sporting deal and extends into the years to come until 2029. This was in response to Qatar’s long-term vision to make itself a year-round sports tourism hub by running regular international sports events instead of just once-a-year global tournaments.

The new partnership provides a pipeline of signature ONE Championship events, with the first event coming into town via a huge Hall of Champions event at Aspire Dome in Doha on March 26, 2027. The deal helps Qatar’s backing of the concept that sport’s massive resources can help diversify its economy, increase tourism and provide value.

Moving Beyond Mega-Event Hosting

After the successful FIFA World Cup 2022, Qatar is now looking to build sustainable sports tourism. Rather than count on occasional mega-events, the nation wants to create an annual schedule of international competitions that will result in predictable tourist flows and international media attention.

Events such as ONE Championship, the Qatar Grand Prix for Formula 1 and the upcoming international events bring a constant tourist flow to the country’s hotels, sport facilities are also activated and local markets are also boosted year-round.

The agreement dovetails with Qatar National Vision 2030 which seeks to move Qatar away from dependency on hydrocarbons, and towards economic diversification and sustainable development.

International sporting events provide repeat visits and stimulate the growth of demand within the accommodation, transport, retail, and events industry. The current ones like Aspire Dome and Lusail Sports Arena are using them on a continuous basis which would enhance the returns on previous investments.
