The Best Time to Visit Popular Gulf Destinations

Published

gulf destinations

Some people think of the Gulf when it comes to sun-splendor and hot desert weather, yet that is not always the case. Each place is at its best during a different season, ranging from the cool winter beaches of Dubai to the misty peaks of Saudi Arabia, and the end-of-summer monsoon rains of Khareef in Oman. When you choose your time to visit could be the difference between having a refreshing or stressful vacation.

In most of the GCC countries the best time to visit is from November to March. It is the peak travel season all over the Arabian Peninsula as the weather is good, out-of-doors festivals are happening and the sightseeing is easy.

Winter

The winter months are clearly the high traffic time for the all-time loved-for-weather Gulf. The temperature during the daytime is typically between 18°C and 28°C and is great for beaches, desert safaris, walking tours and outdoor dining.

The UAE features vibrant events like Dubai Shopping Festival and Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix, bringing cities to life, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Other such architectural wonders, like Souq Waqif (Qatar), Bahrain Fort, and Kuwait Towers are also much better to visit in cooler weather.

Shoulder Season Offers Great Value

For those who want less tourist crowds and less expensive hotel rates, go to the property in April-May or September-October. Daytime highs are getting higher but nights are relatively cool with a good coastal breeze.

Many luxurious hotels have great packages for these months, leading to an exceptional time for high-end vacations without paying peak season rates, especially in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is quite an interesting travel destination due to offering two very different rates of travel experiences. The cooler weather that January, February and November bring makes it ideal for viewing cities like Riyadh and historical sites like AlUla.

The opposite picture is true for the Asir region, however. The city of Abha and Al Saudah are high in the mountains of Sarawat, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C at summer-time, which is one of the few ‘natural’ resorts in the GCC region from the searing desert heat.

Oman

There are also two season times for travelling in Oman. The best time for trekking and outdoor activities in the country is October to April when it is comfortable to visit Muscat and the Hajar Mountains.

During the Khareef season (July to September) much changes in the region of southern Oman. Seasonal rains fertilize the saline, while the low temperatures and fog-trimmed hills make Salalah green and lush as visitors from throughout the Gulf flock to the area.

Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait

Visitors can enjoy a comfortable stay in Qatar from November to March, and these are the times when there are very special attractions in which they can enjoy the Katara Cultural Village, the Museum of Islamic Art and the Inland Sea.

The winter holiday season is also spectacular in Bahrain with the comfortable weather also making it suitable for heritage tourism and other major sporting events such as the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix. It is also very beautiful during the winter and at night can see low temperatures of less than 10°C that are ideal for desert camping and outdoor activity.
