Kuwait Iqama Renewal 2026

Kuwait has entered a new era of immigration management with the implementation of Ministerial Resolution No. 2249. The new framework streamlines the residency renewal process to include health insurance, medical checkup, and residency services in one digital environment.

Expatriates are no longer permitted to renew their Iqama within the country without obtaining a valid health insurance plan equal in length with the permits they are renewing. Primary, now, is the process done primarily via the Sahel app and MoH platforms, with fewer procedures that require in-person meetings.

It is crucial for expatriates working and residing in Kuwait to be aware of these new requirements to prevent any delays, penalties or residency hurdles.

Why Does the KD 100 Health Insurance Fee Matters?

Perhaps the biggest 2026 update to the section of the tax code that also covers fringe benefits is the annual health insurance tax break of 100 thousand KD. The payment has now become a mandatory condition for renewing residence, and is directly connected with the MOT’s electronic verification system.

The government no longer uses the old tier insurance or tier profiles, it has opted for a standard annual fee model. When you pay, the insurance information is automatically transferred to the appropriate government databases.

But this is not enough to be paid. In addition to the required health screening process, applicants are also required to have a valid insurance status before their insurance status will be considered.

When there is no record for the residency, then the application for renewing the residency will be denied automatically.

Step 1: Check Your Residency Expiry Date Early

You wouldn’t want to renew late, and there’s a reason for starting early for renewal procedures. You don’t want to wind up renewing late and there’s a reason to start early for renewal process. Expatriates can initiate the renewal process with the digital system at the very beginning quarter prior to the deadline in Kuwait.

They can use the Sahel app to check their residency status, and any issues that might be standing in their way for renewal. Another aspect to be addressed at this point is ensuring that all unpaid traffic fines, civil fines and government outstanding penalties are dealt with/cleared before processing continues.

Applying early provides applicants with time to meet all the prerequisites so that they don’t run into the risk of expiring their residency.

Step 2: Pay the KD 100 Health Insurance Fee

Another step is to pay the compulsory premium for health insurance via the Sahel integrated services or the online services of the Ministry of Health.

The candidate has to provide all details, including the Civil ID number and enter the applicable residency field, like Article 18 (private-sector workers), Article 17 (government employees), Article 22 (dependents), etc.

Once payment is received on KNET the system automatically creates a digital receipt and note to the insurance record of the applicant. The data is sent automatically to the residency database of the Ministry of the Interior.

Step 3: Complete the Required Medical Examination

Some residents may think that paying insurance fees is the end of the task. However, in Kuwait, the applicants have to undergo an annual medical examination in authorized hospitals.

Appointments are possible on official platforms of the ministry of health such as the Dawi system. Some applicants might be required to have routine check-ups, blood tests or medical checks depending on residency qualification and health conditions.

If the exam is painlessly done, the health worker will then update the individual’s digital record. The insurance status subsequently becomes “Insurance Valid” and the process of renewal of residence can take place.

Step 4: Renew Iqama with Sahel

Once these health insurance and medical examination requirements have been met, the final renewal step will be done via Sahel’s app.

The applicant’s file is submitted to the Ministry of Interior’s automated system where it is verified by the system, validity of insurance, medical clearance and compliance with all the requirements. The government will then reimburse residency fees in yearly payments of KD 20 directly through the application of the eligible parties.

Once paid, the status residency will be updated electronically, and the new digital Civil ID will be available on the Kuwait platform Mobile ID.

New 6-Month Absence Rule

Kuwait has streamlined the process for renewing digital IDs, but also tightened residency monitoring. The new scheme will render permanent residency in the country forfeitable after 6 consecutive months in a row for those who leave Kuwait.

Nowadays, the system of immigration records is computerised in order to monitor people who leave and enter. After six months, the residency status may be rescinded with no consideration of remaining visa validity or payment of insurance.

There are some exceptions to this rule such as long-term investors, property owners, children of Kuwaiti women with special residency permits.

What These Changes Mean for Expats?

The new residency is part of Kuwait’s wider vision to move towards digitizing government services and making the management of each one more efficient. The process is now simpler but the degree of compliance is more tight.

When expatriates need to pay for health insurance-payments, medical examinations, and renew their residency, they have to make sure that these are done on time. Any of these elements can cause a delay and disrupt the process, which might impact employment, travel plans and legal residency status.

For the majority of residents, maintaining uninterrupted residency will be through being proactive in planning and regular checks via the Sahel app.
