India Oman Hormuz Security

The 15th meeting of the India-Oman Strategic Consultative Group took place in New Delhi on 7th October, during which India and Oman discussed security in the region and cooperation between the two countries.

The talks also covered matters relating to the Strait of Hormuz, which is of huge importance for international shipping and energy movements. Senior officials reviewed existing cooperation and possibilities for improving coordination in the region amid existing challenges and uncertainties regarding maritime security.

Sripriya Ranganathan led the meeting along with Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Harthy. Both sides also discussed advances with regards to the CEPA between the two countries, which is expected to help boost trade and investment.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters for Shipping?

The Strait of Hormuz is the passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and the world’s largest Arabian Sea. It is one of the most strategic maritime chokepoints for oil and liquefied natural gas in the world, especially for the flow of oil and gas. Regional tension, attack, distrust on navigation or delay can postpone the flow of cargo, result in higher insurance costs, and supply uncertainty to shipping companies.

Maritime security thus is a direct link to economic stability in India and Oman. Better communication and information exchange and coordination between concerned authorities will provide benefits in detecting potential risks and facilitating safe commercial operations. But the agenda is not reported as being signed off on new joint patrols or specific surveillance measures.

Energy Security and Trade Implications for India

Access to uninterrupted energy supplies via the Gulf shipping routes is a crucial national priority and India has got a great dependence on imported energy. Any long-lasting disturbances due to Hormuz will increase oils and gas prices, transportation costs and burden businesses and household budgets further. The increase in energy prices may also impact fertilizer production, agricultural supply chains and manufacturing.

There is an economic aspect to this strategic partnership in the India-Oman CEPA negotiations. Businesses have the opportunity to tap new markets through increased bilateral trade in goods, services and investments. Meanwhile, at the same time, predictability of deliveries and cost control depends on the security of maritime routes. The geographical proximity of Oman to the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz makes cooperation with Oman very significant.

Travel Safety and Wider Regional Connectivity

Indian nationals serving outside of India, including within the maritime industry, may face problems due to maritime instability. Considerations for protecting crews and to maintain consular communication and access to emergency assistance remain important, wherever my ship’s risk grows.

While there are different issues involved in transit for aviation and sea transport, regional turmoil may also affect air routes and travel planning and the price of transport. For both nations, diplomacy is a means to explore new challenges and enhance relations between them.

Though the information provided doesn’t mention any immediate new security measures, the continued consultation between New Delhi and Muscat is crucial to ensure peace and stability in the extended region of influence and to protect common interests.
