Oman King’s Visit to Kazakhstan Signals New Chapter in Bilateral Relations

Sultan His Highness Sheikh Haitham bin Tarik of Oman has been welcomed in Astana for a historic two-day state visit which marks a new chapter in diplomatic and economic ties between the Sultanate of Oman and Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev hosted another high-level reception ceremony at the Palace of Independence, where Sultan Haitham was warmly welcomed. The event demonstrated the mutual high regard of the two countries for the bilateral relationship.

During the exchanges, Sultan Haitham together with President Tokayev discussed issues of deepening cooperation in the field of trade, energy, logistics and investment. The leaders also discussed ways for deepening institutional cooperation and tapping into new economic potential between the Gulf and Central Asian countries.

The visit follows the ongoing efforts of Oman in its engagement with Central Asian nations, particularly Kazakhstan, with whom it is moving to strengthen maximum cooperation in the fields of transport connections, investments, and industrial cooperation.

Issues covered also had a shared interest in developing pragmatic economic partnerships, including considerations about transport corridors, food security and joint ventures. The two Leaders discussed regional and international matters, and put forward the idea of dialogue and cooperation in the multi-lateral approach.

The visit of the 5–6 October is eagerly awaited as a turning point in Oman-Kazakhstani relations, and mutual economic cooperation and strategic political cooperation remains at the heart of their relationship.

The state visit, for Muscat and Astana, may be a possible catalyst for the establishment of a more stable basis to advance long-term cooperation and help strengthen the ties between the Gulf region and Central Asia.
