Why Young Gulf Audiences Want Experiences, Not Just Content?
It is an intriguing paradox in the Gulf that the youth are more connected than ever yet they’re more hungry for experiences away from their screens than ever before. In Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar, and anywhere else within the Middle East, Gen Z and the Young Millennials are shifting their gaze away from relentless feeds and instead focusing on festivals, pop-ups, exhibitions, gaming events, and cultural events.
There’s no shortage of brands making polished reels or creators publishing their content on the instant. With all that content out there, it’s less noticed. Experiences, on the other hand, are rare, feel personal and are worthy of conversation.
From Content Consumption to Participation
For years, brands have fought each other for impressions, views and clicks. Contributing reasons are now in demand by Gulf Youth for them to be participating. The exhibitions are hence created in an immersive way and are complemented by the live tournaments, music festivals, interactive retail and experiential cafés, which bring audiences from being spectators into participants.
That distinction matters. A video can be seen from anywhere, and be forgotten in minutes. Physical attendance makes memories, connections, photos, and emotions with the brand/community behind an event that much more memorable.
Experience Has Become Social Currency
Experiences are also a type of social capital for young consumers in the Gulf. There is a way that having played a big show, found an edutainment show or was involved in a cultural event can become part of someone’s identity and really, of their digital storytelling.
The experience economy does not get rid of social media; it adds value to social media to which it might belong. People want to share the experience with others, and what they feel most excited about in the best physical experiences is the emotion that makes them feel like they’re in some sort of secret or the event was spontaneous and hard to replicate.
The Rise of “Khaleeji Cool”
The most significant one is cultural. Gulf youth are not asking for is Western entertainment repackaged for the Gulf market. They are more and more desiring local distinctiveness in an international context. They increasingly desire local distinctiveness with international influences.
It’s a rather unmistakably modern “Khaleeji cool”: Khaleeji sounds, Khaleeji fashion and street-style and Khaleeji aesthetics in contemporary creative locations. What’s appealing is the very process of change into no past, but present.
New Entertainment Landscape
The ongoing shift is being quickened by government sponsored diversifications. Meanwhile, proponents from Saudi Arabia Vision 2030, the UAE with its tourism and cultural development plans, and Qatar with its national development programmes, have helped to build a fast-growing entertainment, arts, tourism and leisure development network.
Projects like Qiddiya, Diriyah, Saadiyat Cultural District and Msheireb are bringing experiences that for a long time only foreign tourists could enjoy to the youth. The Gulf is not only consuming entertainment worldwide, it is also the destination for entertainment.
Why Community Matters?
Belonging is the other motivator behind the movement. Young people are looking for “third spaces” in which to meet real encounters of those with similar hobbies. After a few years of digitally mediated interaction, young people are calling for “third spaces” that enable them to meet face to face with others who share similar hobbies.
From specialty coffee to fashion, gaming to wellness, anime to music and independent art to everything else, these spaces give ideas communities. An important takeaway for brands is reaching your audience has changed into youth engagement. It’s really about building a space that they feel is for them.
