Residents of Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra, Mirfa and the Western Region are closely watching as security is raised at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant following Sunday’s incident.
Police said an attack by a drone resulted in a fire inside an electrical generating unit outside the plant’s inner operating area. The occurrence immediately raised concerns on social media about potential blackouts or water shortages, as well as environmental risks.
Not so anymore though, as the UAE government and nuclear regulators have made it abundantly clear that the UAE’s electricity and water supply network is completely stable and functioning.
Affected by Power Supply in Abu Dhabi
The official reply from the UAE authorities is it is not possible. No service interruption anywhere on the Abu Dhabi grid, Al Dhafra grid and throughout the UAE.
All the national power distribution systems are working as usual, reports the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). No disruptions to home electric, cooling or community service usage have been reported.
Such an event was not considered to have occurred in the highly protected reactor containment area,” officials emphasized.
Barakah Nuclear Plant Incident
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) says the explosion was fired by an electrical power generator on the outside of the building after the drone strike.
Emergency response teams quickly singled out the affected area and initiated routine safety protocols. One operating unit was temporarily placed in “emergency” diesel standby as routine protection.
Later authorities confirmed that the four units at Barakah nuclear are still active and are online and connected to the UAE’s power grid.
Is Abu Dhabi’s Water Supply Safe?
The desalinated water supply in Abu Dhabi is not affected at all. Water production plants and desalination plants in the Emirate are still operating normally. EWEC officials stated that no reason for worrying exists as far as functioning of all municipal water systems is concerned.
The UAE’s infrastructure facilities are very diversified and the isolated generator fire had no effect on the water production or distribution routes anywhere in the UAE.
Is There Any Radiation Risk?
The UAE’s nuclear authority and international bodies have explicitly denied that the incident poses a risk to the environment or is a leak and said there were no reports of any breach.
FANR verified that the fire was outside the protected inner containment zone and the fire did not affect radioactive material, the containment or spent fuel storage.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also said that the radiological situation in the region is normal.
Al Dhafra’s Alternative Energy Network
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant provides about 25% of all electricity consumed in the UAE and over 50% of the electricity consumed in the house in Abu Dhabi. One of the main reasons people didn’t have blackouts after the incident is because of this infrastructure resilience.
The area of Al Dhafra is home to several major energy projects, including the Abu Dhabi Gas Industries and LNG Khaleed on the border with Oman, which provide the UAE with electricity and water.
The Al Dhafra Solar PV Plant is one of the largest initiatives, producing some 1,584 MWs of renewable energy, along with Mirfa power and desalination complexes.
These facilities are integrated into the network via sophisticated load-balancing equipment, meaning that when load peaks occur in other parts of the network, alternative energy is able to instantly make up its difference.
