How to Set Up Starlink for Desert Camping & RV Trips in the UAE?

Internet access is not always easy when travelling in the UAE deserts, especially for families and RV travellers to explore the remote desert areas of the UAE such as Lahbab, Liwa, Fossil Rock etc. Starlink provides an option for moving outside the grid, but if you’re going to operate in the desert, take care with power, heat and visibility of the satellite from sand.

The lower power consumption and built-in Wi-Fi router make the Starlink Mini more ideal for mobile camping. Choosing the Standard model is better for larger RVs, especially if they go for increased throughout and WiFi coverage.

Choose the Right Starlink Equipment

Typically 25W-40W, the Starlink Mini consumes enough power to power from a suitable USB-C PD power source, or vehicle power source. The Standard model typically needs a larger wattage, usually 50-75 W, so an inverter or stand-alone DC-to-DC converter may be a good solution for use in an RV application.

Starlink Roam plan is designed to make use of connectivity on the go when travelling. Campers are requested to choose the right service via the UAE service channels provided by Starlink and to put it on hold while it’s not needed.

Plan Your Off-Grid Power

Often desert camps do not have a grid and power planning is required. A portable power station of 500Wh or greater will be able to deliver a few hours of Starlink Mini operation, subject to the actual power draw of Starlink Mini and other devices that are connected.

Direct DC power can enhance efficiency for RV users. Converting battery energy to 220VAC and back to 12VDC is an energy-intensive process, and using the Mini with an appropriate (and correct) 12V-to-USB-C PD power converter will reduce some of this loss.

Find a Clear View of the Sky

Select an open area existing clear of tall dunes, cliffs etc. before turning on the dish. Before choosing a campsite, check the sky around you using the obstruction checking feature of the Starlink App.

This is especially crucial because obstructions in the physical environment may affect satellite communications. Before putting the equipment in place, find the optimal placement.

Mount and Secure the Dish

When there is an abundance of desert sand, the dish without any precautions can be blown away. Save the included kick stand to place on a surface that is not sand; attach the dish to a solid tripod with sandbags.

RV owners can opt for the appropriate roof-rack or specially designed mounting points. No matter what technique is employed, the dish should hold up in windy weather.

Manage UAE Heat and Sand

Electronic and power equipment may be tested by extreme temperatures in the desert. Shade Power Stations and other sensitive equipment and ensure adequate ventilation, preferably in a vehicle environment suitable for power stations.

Connectors should also be kept away from any dust or sand. Gently buff the dish with a dry microfiber cloth, definitely don’t scrub it like you would with a dish sponge or dish towel; the pressure and scrubbing could scratch the surface of the dish.

Configure Your Connection

After being powered, the system can connect in a matter of minutes. Adjust to Starlink by referencing the Connectivity and Alignment in the Starlink App, and set up a unique Wi-Fi name and password.

Bypass Mode can be used in an RV where a separate networking system is employed where compatible with the desired network configuration.
