Houthi Attacks Prompt Postponement of GCC-EU Summit in Riyadh
The GGC-EU have jointly decided to postpone the second high-level GCC EU Summit, which was scheduled for October 24, 2026, in Riyadh. The move comes after rising fears of security and disruptions in the region have raised doubts over the security of any participating delegations moving through the region.
Airport Disruptions Affect Diplomatic Plans
The postponement of the GGC-EU Summit was said to be high on items on the Houthis’ list, the targeting of infrastructure such as the King Khalid International Airport, Riyadh, being one of them. Flight operations were suspended following the reported attack and airspace alerts across the region were enhanced, which impacted travel plans. There was a growing difficulty in the preparations for the high level gathering with these developments.
GCC and EU Reaffirm Strategic Partnership
But both sides were quick to emphasize that it was for “security reasons” and not due to any shift in diplomatic priorities. The two regions have always seen their strategic partnership as being meaningful for stability in the region, economic cooperation, and discussion of joint international problems. The delay reflects a brief set-back in routine diplomatic relations.
New Summit Date Remains Unconfirmed
The cancelled meeting has not yet been rescheduled and is under consultation as things change. The decision on a proper time for the summit depends on regional security, as well as on the aviation operations. The delay emphasizes the extent to which the security advances in the Gulf are able to influence international policy and high level presence processes.
