Etihad Rail Violations

The new era of public transport in the UAE began with the launch of passengers’ service in the Etihad Rail Express, which provides faster and more convenient travel between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. In addition to passenger services, Etihad Rail has handed out a comprehensive Passenger Code of Conduct to guarantee the safety, comfort and efficiency of these national railway operations.

The authorities have established a system of penalties for maintaining discipline on board and in the stations of the railway services. In case of minor faults, passengers may be fined Dh200, while in case of incidents that pose risks to safety of the public as well as the railways operation is concerned, a fine of Dh10,000 may be imposed.

Why Has Etihad Rail Introduced Strict Passenger Rules?

The new nationwide passenger rail system is the UAE’s first such project and it’s important it’s safe and comfortable for all passengers. The new rules aim to reduce disruptive behaviour, safeguard the railway infrastructure, and promote responsible travel.

The fines are also consistent with international railway safety regulations which call upon the passengers to treat other travellers and workers with respect.

Common Violations That Carry Dh200 Fines

Some of the fines relate to common actions which are often overlooked but can have a negative impact on other travellers. Some of the fines are for chilling on seats, travelling without a ticket, sitting in a seat reserved for a higher class ticket, or travelling in a higher class ticket seat in order to sit in a lower class ticket seat, with a DH200 ticket.

Fines are also possible for passengers for littering, not following staff directions, using concession tickets without being eligible, forging tickets, drinking alcohol when it isn’t allowed, carrying unacceptable items, or drinking while intoxicated when travelling.

Behaviour That Could Cost You Dh500

There are much heavier sanctions for more serious crimes. Smoking or vaping is banned in all areas where it is prohibited and the same applies to punitive measures for abusive behaviour, harassment, threatening passengers, or deliberately littering trains and stations, which are all subject to a Dh500 fine.

The same financial fine will apply to any passenger who disturbs the doors to the train, gets on or off a train while it is moving, hinders the service without good reason, engages in commercial photography without authorization or carries controlled substances on the train.

Serious Safety Offences Can Lead to Dh5,000 Fines

Highest standard penalties are aimed at railway safety breaches that compromise safety. A Dh5000 fine is imposed on anyone who alters emergency equipment (alarms, emergency brakes, exits etc) unless for a legitimate reason.

These are also significant offences that can cause significant financial damage, including trespass on railway property, damaging stations or trains, vandalism, throwing objects at the railway judges and entering restricted operational areas.

Violations That Can Cost Up to Dh10,000

In addition to fixed penalties for the offences, Etihad Rail has kept the discretion to impose fines a maximum of Dh10,000 for offences not mentioned in the Passenger Charter. The final cost will vary depending on the severity of offence and the extent to which passengers, staff or the railway are at risk.

In very bad cases, an offender might also be taken out of the train and/or be passed to law-makers for other legal measures to be taken.

Rules Every Passenger Should Remember

The Passenger Code is more than just financial fines. Inappropriate or offensive clothing, excessive noise from electronic devices and disturbance of other passengers could prevent them from travelling or affect their ability to do so.

Cycling, e-scooters and motorised e-bikes are also not allowed on Etihad Rail’s trains. It is also not okay to carry overly large bags that will obstruct the rows, exits or emergency equipment.
