Inside the UAE’s New $30 Million Emergency Aid Blueprint for Sudan
The UAE has made a new humanitarian pledge to Sudan of $30 million emergency aid directly ordered by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates. The money was supposed to be a short-term measure for the civilians of the ongoing conflict, especially those in El Obeid (Al Obeid) in the North Kordofan region of Sudan. The project is part of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to help the vulnerable during humanitarian emergencies.
The new package will be delivered, via the newly established UAE Aid Agency, in close collaboration with United Nations humanitarian organisations, people who need relief the most. The UAE’s partnership with global renowned organizations will help to ensure that the aid will be delivered in the most efficient and speedy manner without compromising transparency under challenging conditions.
Why Has El Obeid Become the Priority?
The continued conflict, displacement and disruption of basic services have caused El Obeid to be among the worst-hit cities in Sudan. All of the thousands of families displaced and many of those staying are still facing limited access to food, medicine, clean drinking water, and safe shelter.
These are more pressing humanitarian concerns that the UAE is addressing at the ground level. Unlike political developments, the aid package focuses exclusively on life-saving aid that can directly help for the well being of families made up of forced migrants and vulnerable civilians.
Food, Water and Nutrition Assistance
Much of the funds will increase food security in affected communities. Emergency food rations will be placed in the hands of families that have critical needs, and extra resources will help enhance access to safe drinking water.
In order to minimize the transmission of water-borne illnesses, especially among the temporary shelters’ children and elderly residents, who are the most vulnerable, water purification systems will be installed in selected areas. They hope these measures will be effective in tackling immediate hunger, as well as longer-term health issues of public health.
Strengthening Healthcare Services
North Kordofan is still subjected to one of the most increased problems in health care units regarding lack of medicines, trauma supplies, and equipment. UAE’s emergency funding will be used to keep other hospitals and field clinics operating providing necessary medicines, emergency trauma kits and neonatal care equipment.
The aim of the medical support is to ensure that injured civilians and mothers and their little ones are treated, as they rarely have access to medical services when a conflict occurs. One of the core missions of the relief operation is to enhance healthcare capabilities.
Emergency Shelter for Displaced Families
The war has dislodged thousands of Sudanese families and left them living in makeshift tents in camps. The UAE’s humanitarian efforts cover the provision of relief materials, such as tents, blankets, hygiene units, and other weather-proof tents to ensure basic living needs are met to alleviate the situation of displaced communities.
Safe shelters will provide protection from the harsh environmental conditions as well as minimize health risks due to unfit temporary shelters and overcrowding.
UAE’s Expanding Humanitarian Role in Sudan
The UAE’s humanitarian aid for Sudan rose to some $800 Million since the outbreak of the crisis with this latest donation. The graph reflects the nation’s long-standing efforts to contribute to relief activities with financial assistance, humanitarian cooperation, and emergency response measures.
In connection with the funding announcement, UAE International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council (UIHPC) urged the parties to the conflict to ensure the protection of civilians and to provide a safe humanitarian corridor. The council said that not interfering with access of relief organisations is the crucial element in reaching to the most populated communities.
