UAE President Heads to Germany for State Visit and High-Level Talks on Wednesday
President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is expected to come to Germany on Wednesday for a state visit to further foster the UAE’s long-standing ties with Germany. On the visit, the UAE President will convene high-level talks with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The negotiations will be based on enhancing cooperation in selected fields, among the most important of which will be economic development, investment and strategic partnerships. The regional and international situation as well as issues of mutual interest will also be discussed in detail between the two sides.
UAE-Germany Strategic Partnership
The visit follows the UAE-German relations that are being developed in various fields. Diplomatic relations were established in 1972, and their strategic partnership was hammered out in 2004, laying a groundwork for them to foster closer political, economic and institutional relations.
The economic relationship has also become a significant aspect of the relationship. The bilateral trade volume of UAE and Germany increased to more than $15.5 billion in 2025 and approximately 2,000 German firms have set up in the UAE. The firm has a presence in Germany with major businesses like BMW, Siemens and ThyssenKrupp.
Focus on Trade and Investment
Ongoing co-operation between public and private sectors is expected to be crucial to the state visit. In Berlin, the Germany-UAE Business Council was inaugurated in July 2025, which will present a new investment opportunity and a new venue for companies from Germany and UAE for further cooperation.
The council is built on the successes of the German Emirati Joint Council for Industry and Commerce formed in 2009. It connects and facilitates more between German and Emirati companies and components, and supports more links between the two economies from the private sector.
Energy and Advanced Technology Cooperation
Besides energy, another important field of cooperation between the UAE and Germany is Energy. The growth of the energy sector is reinforced by Chancellor Merz’s visit to Abu Dhabi in February where the two discussions increased energy cooperation.
The collaboration is also progressing to highly demanded industries and technologies. Cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, innovation and industrial development can bring fresh possibilities for both sides as a means of economic diversification in the long term.
Education, Culture and Tourism Links
The relationship between the UAE and Germany is not just Government and business. German schools are available in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, and the German Emirati Vocational Institute offers young people hands-on career training and internationally recognised qualifications.
Cultural and tourism links are increasing, too. The Goethe-Institut has been active in Abu Dhabi since 2006 and plans to benefit from increased air transportation between the two countries are likely to facilitate more travel, trade and people-to-people relations.
Visit to Deepen Bilateral Relations
Sheikh Mohamed’s state visit marks the continuation of further strengthening of the partnership between UAE and Germany. There is potential for further expansion of the relationship and the creation of new lines of cooperation given the level of cooperation reached in trade, energy, technology, education and culture.
