UAE Submits Lana Nusseibeh’s Candidacy for UN Secretary-General

Lana Nusseibeh has been nominated by the UAE as the next UN Secretary General. The candidacy was registered by a letter from the UAE President to the Security Council and General Assembly. The process of selection will be the appointment of the new head of the UN thereafter on December 31, 2026.

Nusseibeh’s campaign manifesto, A United Nations for the Next Eighty Years, is centered on the ways to build a stronger culture of conflict prevention, revise the multilateral game and facilitate geopolitical unity. It also focuses on organisational responsibility, specific crisis response and re-establishment of trust in the international institution.

UAE UN Nomination Draws on Diplomatic Experience

From 2013 to 2024, Nusseibeh was the UAE Permanent Representative to the UN. She was also director of the delegation to the United Nations to represent the UAE to become a member of the Security Council as an elected member in 2022–2023, and twice served as the rotating President of the Security Council, with which experience in international negotiations has been gained.

UN Secretary General Selection Process Continues

Nusseibeh has been nominated for the top job in the organisation, as Sheikh Mohammed’s name has been considered. She has been seen to have taken time out from her ministerial duties to focus on the campaign while consultations continue in the Security Council.

Lana Nusseibeh Candidacy Targets Global Cooperation

The campaign follows the preparatory of the United Nations for a change of leadership that will take place on January 1, 2027. Nusseibeh’s key priorities focus on international conflict and institutional effectiveness and cooperation between nations in the face of geopolitical tensions. In selecting a new secretary-general, the council will draw on its recommendations and the General Assembly will consider it.
