Information indicates that since a petroleum oil spill on an offshore tanker near Dubai, undesirable petroleum-type smells have been reported in various areas of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain. The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment is said to be pointing to drift of airborne pollution from the affected marine zone as the cause of the odor. The authorities have started to take preventive measures along the northern coast.

Umm Al Qwain’s beaches and coastal enclosures have been temporarily closed due to precautions. Specialist marine response teams are being deployed to contain and clean up any pollution and remove any remaining oil in the waters and shorelines in the area of concern.

UAE Oil Spill Odours Trigger Marine Warnings

Fisheries and commercial marine operators have been advised to stay out of impacted areas in the coastal environment until cleanup activities and environmental assessments are finished. There are 12 containment teams along the Northern coast to monitor and control the spill, with teams dedicated to cleanup of the residual surface oil and to oversee exposure to the shoreline.
