Riyadh Metro, touted as the longest driverless metro system globally, is a landmark project that is going to transform the Saudi capital city’s entire public transportation scenario. The partial launch planned is scheduled for November 27.
During the launch, trains are going to run on 3 of 6 planned lines. The remaining lines are expected to come online in mid-December. The project represents the Kingdom’s deepening focus on economic diversification.
Sustainability at the core of Riyadh Metro project
Riyadh Metro is going to significantly reduce car dependency in the country, ease traffic congestion and position the city as a global hub for trade and commerce. The $22.5 billion metro faced multiple delays since getting approval in 2012.
Sustainability is at the core of the project. Solar panels installed at stations and depots are expected to generate 20% of the energy required for critical systems. There is also the added advantage from regenerative braking system and energy-efficient trains.
