An AI (Artificial intelligence) project from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is helping to preserve red sea marine life. The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, a public research university located in Saudi Arabia’s Thuwal, has started employing AI to preserve Red Sea fish species and analyze fish populations, fishing practices, and environmental factors.
KAUST, the first mixed-gender university campus in Saudi Arabia, has applied machine learning techniques to forecast future stock levels and understand the fish populations in the red sea.
In recent months, the government of Saudi Arabia invested in aquaculture to supplement the declining catch from Red Sea fisheries, as reported by Arab News.
Saudi Arabia’s Green Riyadh Program is also a project that is aimed towards developing the environment.
Andrew Temple, KAUST’s Red Sea Research Center (RSRC), told Arab News, “Fishing is a trade-off between how quickly the population of each species can grow and how much we take out. This is bad for people who rely on fishing as a source of food or income.”
The KAUST Beacon Development Fisheries Team gathered data on the size, age, and reproductive maturity of some species, including fish. The team also calculated the economic value of fish. Reportedly, fishes have different rates in different areas.
Last year, the sports committee of the American Chamber of Commerce Saudi Arabia (AmCham Saudi Arabia) said that Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coastline can become a major global marine sports destination.

Hassan Alkabbani, chairman of the Saudi Sailing Federation and Rosanna Chopra, executive director of Red Sea Global attended a meeting at Al-Marsa Yacht Club, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, to talk about marine life.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia installed 750,000 solar panels as part of the first phase of its Red Sea Project. The Project, supported by Red Sea Global, a company owned by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, aims to develop an environment-friendly tourist destination.
