Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar Reaches Oman After Kuwait Visit During Strategic Gulf Tour
The External Affairs Minister of India, Dr. S Jaishankar, has landed in Muscat, Oman for the last stop on his crucial four-nation Gulf diplomatic tour. The engagement took place after successful talks with the UAE in Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, where the possibility of further deepening ties between India and the UAE in the areas of trade, energy, technology and security in the region was discussed.
The trip to Oman underscores Delhi’s rising focus on developing strategic partnership with Gulf countries in light of the changing geopolitical dynamics and economic integration.
Jaishankar Wraps Up Productive Kuwait Visit
Prior to Muscat, Dr. Jaishankar toured Kuwait before his arrival for meetings with Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. The chiefs discussed joint collaboration on energy, investments, labour mobility and regional security.
The talks reinforced the existing positive dynamics between the two countries and the intention to strengthen the economic partnership and people-to-people ties between India and Kuwait.
India and Oman Review Strategic Partnership
Dr. Jaishankar also had a meeting with the Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi shortly after arriving in Oman to examine the existing India-Oman Strategic Partnership.
The topics included defense cooperation, cooperation in the field of trade, maritime security, development of new technologies and developments in the region. Both sides discussed the significance of diplomatic coordination, so as to better adapt to the complex regional environment in the future.
Duqm Port Emerges as a Key Strategic Priority
The focus of discussion during the recital of the Oman visit was one of the most strategically situated deep-sea ports of the Middle East – Duqm Port.
Situated to the south of the Strait of Hormuz, Duqm will provide India with important logistic support for Naval operations and enhance Maritime security in the Western Indian Ocean. The development of the port cooperation is a proof of both countries’ willingness to safeguard international shipping lanes and stability in the region.
Focus on Maritime Security and Energy Supply
Another key element of the bilateral talks was the issue of regional maritime security. Dr. Jaishankar said that Oman had come to India’s support in protecting Indian sailors timeously despite the recent tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Both parties also highlighted the need for the uninterrupted flow of commercial shipping, the security of energy supply chains and freedom of navigation in the critical sea routes.
Expanding Cooperation Beyond Energy
India is increasingly shifting its focus towards the future-based areas as it works with Oman, though cooperation in energy is still regarded as vital.
The two sides talked about the further development of cooperation in the financial technology (fintech), artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, digital innovation and space sectors. Under both countries’ development strategies, these emerging sectors are poised to assume a significant role in the development of economic ties and continuous economic growth.
Meeting the Indian Diaspora
Dr. Jaishankar also met with members of the active and vibrant Indian community in Oman during his visit to Muscat.
He appreciated the efforts of the members of the Indian diaspora to foster cultural awareness, support bilateral commerce, and act as a “permanent cultural link” between India and the Sultanate. Omani Indians have continued to be good contributors in the sectors of healthcare, education, engineering, construction and business in Oman.
Strengthening India-GCC Relations
Dr. Jaishankar’s visit to the Gulf region highlights India’s unfolding dynamics with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) state block which has become more significant because of its geopolitical/geoeconomic significance.
The visit also aims to strengthen India’s strategic ties with key Gulf nations and foster long-term regional stability, highlighting India’s commitment to building robust relationships in the region while showcasing advanced technologies, investment opportunities, and benefits for both maritime security and workforce mobility.
