Dubai Car Seat Rules 2026: The Precise Age and Height Limits Your Child Needs to Legally Sit in the Front Seat
Knowing the current child passenger safety regulations will be of great importance before you make plans for your next road trip with the kids in Dubai. Dubai Police and Roads and Transport Authority prescribe specific regulations for children to legally sit in the driver’s seat or the front passenger seats. Workers who do not observe these are vulnerable to fines, black points and unwarranted safety issues.
The law places a focus on two main elements – age and height and must be two out of three before a child can be seated in the front seat. This is all parents/carers should know about Dubai car seat regulations in 2026.
Dubai Car Seat Rules 2026: Age and Height requirements
The UAE has made clear regulations to ensure that children are transported safely in private vehicles. As per current laws a child can be legally seated in the front passenger seat if they meet the 2 legal needs.
The child has to be 10 years or older and at least 145cm (4 feet 9-inches) in height. All of these requirements are compulsory and will not be interchanged.
The 10 year old should still be seated in the back seat if his height is 140 cm. But once, if it’s a 9-year-old who is 150 cm tall, he’s not legally allowed to sit in the front. Children may legally ride on the front passenger seat if they are at least 12 years old or 4′ 9″ tall.
Why the 145 cm Height Rule Is Important?
Both the head room and tail room are designed to meet vehicle safety engineering requirements, not for convenience. A standard fit for the seatbelt and front airbag are for people that are 145 cm and taller.
In collision airbags violently open up at very high speeds, sometimes higher than 300 km per hour. In children that do not bowleaster, the airbag can be deployed into the head or neck region instead of onto the chest which presents the opportunity for serious injury.
Also, adult restraints might fit across a child’s neck, as opposed to their shoulder, leaving them unrestrained and can cause injury in the event of a traffic crash or sudden stop.
Child Car Seat Requirements by Age
Parents must make sure that the kids are fitted into the proper restraint system in the back seats as well.
Infants (0–12 Months)
Babies must be in a forward-facing approved infant car seat until they reach a maximum weight of 13kg. When secured in the re-facing position, the head, neck and spine are best protected.
Toddlers (1–4 Years)
Should use a convertible or toddler safety seat between 9 and 18 kg. It is ok to put children forward facing but experts suggest keeping them rear facing for as long as possible.
Children (4–6 Years)
Children from 15kg to 25kg should be belted at a height in a high backed booster seat fitted with a suitable harness for correct seat belt placement.
Older Children (6–12 Years)
A booster cushion or belt-positioning seat should be kept in use until children are at the required height, for children weighing 22–36 kg, who are up to 145 cm tall.
Dubai Traffic Penalties for Violating Child Safety Rules
There are various rules in place for child passenger safety and the civil protection personnel in Dubai are actively monitoring them and enforcing the laws through the traffic patrol operations, checkpoints etc.
The driver of a vehicle if they allow a child under 10 years of age or under 145cm to use a passenger seat in the front will be slapped with a fine of AED 400, in addition to four black points on their driving license.
A child aged 0–4 years is not supplied with an approved child car seat and it will be fined AED 400 and receive 4 black points marks.
Also, all passengers have to fasten their seatbelts, regardless of if they are in front or back seats. A separate AED 400 will be imposed on those passengers who are not wearing their seat belts.
Safety Tips for Parents
Measuring children’s height regularly is more important than just using their age to determine growth. The use of an appropriate child restraint system will greatly decrease the risk of injury and meet UAE traffic rules.
Make sure seatbelts are fastened properly across the shoulder and chest and not the neck or face before long trips to ensure they do not fit faulty. A good investment in a quality booster seat will just be a small price to pay for supporting a child’s safety.
