Saudi Supreme Court Confirms Official Ashura 2026 Date – Calendar & Fasting Update
The Saudi Supreme Court officially declared the start of Islamic New Year 1448 after confirmation of crescent moon sightings, thus clarifying one of the most significant dates of the Islamic calendar. Tuesday, 16th Jumada Islam 1431 represents the 1st of Muharram, which is also the opening day of the new Hijri year in the Kingdom, the official declaration said.
The beginning of Ramadhan has been established and with its onset, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and all the GCC countries can have a look at the significance that Ashoura carries and the fasting of Sunnah recommended on this holy day. The announcement also gives businesses, families and communities an accurate timeline to plan a day of religious and other activities.
Official Muharram 1448 AH Calendar
After confirmation from the Supreme Court, the Islamic dates are now set for the month of Muharram 2026.
- 1st Muharram (Islamic New Year): Tuesday, June 16, 2026
- 9th Muharram (Tasu’a): Wednesday, June 24, 2026
- 10th Muharram (Day of Ashura): Thursday, June 25, 2026
These dates hold special importance to Muslims who also do optional fastings and contemplate the start of the new Islamic year.
Why Ashura Holds Special Importance?
In Islam day 10 of Muharram is one of the days that fasting is highly encouraged, called Ashura. In the book Sahih Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad tells us that fasting on Ashura clears our sins of the previous year.
The day is a time for spiritual renewal, thanking God and a time to worship more. Humans around the globe celebrate this fast, which takes place for millions of Muslims when they pray, recite the Quran, and perform acts of charity.
Recommended Sunnah Fasting Schedule
Islamic scholars advise association of the Ashura fast with an extra day for Islam to be differentiated.
The most recommended dates for fasts regarding these occasions are the 9th and 10th of Muharram (Wednesday, 24th June and Thursday, 25th June, 2026).
If you have been unable to see the first combination, then you can fast on the 10th and 11th Muharram, which is on Thursday, 25th and Friday, 26th of June 2026.
Both plans are based on the recommended Sunnah and qualify for the greatest possible spiritual benefits of Ashura.
Public Services and Business Operations in Saudi Arabia
In Saudi Arabia, Muharram is the first day of a new Islamic year but it is not considered a designated holiday. This means that government and private sector employees must work on this day.
Normal banking, government and school and private business hours will continue during the observance period.
Employers and workers however should keep in mind that the “summer Midday Work Ban” in the Kingdom will continue to be in operation during the summer seasons, which would prohibit outdoor work in direct sunlight between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM each day.
Preparing for Ashura 2026
Since the official dates have now been decided, family groups can plan their fasting plans, meal preparation, and religious gatherings beforehand. There will also be special lectures in the mosques and community organisations about the merits of Muharram and Ashura.
The start of the Hijri New Year is the time to also reflect on oneself, new aims, beliefs and commitments to good behavior and community.
