Dubai Food Security

Dubai has unveiled five initiatives under the Dubai Food Security Strategy 2030, which was approved by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The plan aims to integrate the local production of food, resilience of the food chain and reduction of wasted food, as well as regulation and investments to boost the food system in the emirate.

Five Initiatives Under Dubai Food Security Strategy 2030

The focus of the five initiatives is extending local agriculture, fisheries and livestock production, diversifying food imports, minimising waste, better governance and AgriTech investments and adaptive infrastructure supported by partnerships with international research institutions. In addition, the support for small hold farmers will also be scaled up to boost production in the farms. Here are the 5 initiatives under Dubai Food Security 2030.

Initiative 1 Expanding Local Production

Dubai will enhance agricultural production, the small-scale farming sector and the fisheries and livestock industry, whilst also providing support for the small-scale farmer and agricultural cooperatives.

Initiative 2 Strengthening Supply Chains

The plan aims for 3-5 diversified import alternatives on each main food category, diversifying the reliance on a single supplier and making the system more resilient to market and climatic risks.

Initiative 3 Reducing Food Waste

Special campaigns, consumption studies will tell us ways of reducing waste and promising more sustainable ways of living and working.

Initiative 4 Improving Governance and AgriTech Investment

The plans by Dubai are to improve the Dubai Food Security Platform and introduce an Investor Information Platform which focuses on attracting investors to invest in agricultural technology.

Initiative 5 Developing Infrastructure and Research Partnerships

Food infrastructure and collaborative research and development between different countries will be flexible to meet new market demands, as will the coordination across governments and private actors in the logistics.

AED 164 Million Framework Supports Food Security

It has been reported that the implementation of the strategy consists of 20 strategic projects that are connected to an umbrella amount of AED 164 million. The initiatives will aim to boost domestic production and widen sourcing options, as well as enhance the food system’s resilience to disruptions.

Dubai Food Security Strategy Focuses on Long Term Resilience

The programme pools in the concepts of agricultural development, supply chain planning, waste reduction and technological investment. Strong links with public authorities and the private sector operators will be crucial to achieving the strategy’s goals by 2030.
