Nusseibeh UN Bid

The UAE President’s Diplomatic Adviser, Dr Anwar Gargash has answered Iranian Parliament Speaker condemnation over the nomination of Lana Nusseibeh as its candidate to the United Nations Secretariat.

Gargash said that discussion about her vision and qualifications was welcome, but criticized the criticism as not being objective and in contradiction to diplomatic principles.

Gargash Responds to Iranian Criticism of Nusseibeh’s UN Bid

Gargash stated on X on October 25, 2026 that the UAE accepted a probe into Nusseibeh’s diplomatic credentials and their vision. But he lashed out at Ghalibaf’s comments, saying that “talk should be constructive in the spirit of objective assessment about international leadership.

UAE Emphasises the UN Diplomatic Role

Gargash emphasized the “mission for peace,” which the United Nations created to encourage dialogue and foster bridges of peace and understanding between nations, and to settle disputes peacefully. “It should prove to be a forum for multilateral dialogue and exchange, not exacerbate geopolitical tensions or become a venue for resolving intra-regional political differences,” he said.

Lana Nusseibeh’s Candidacy Draws Regional Attention

Resistance from hardline elements was not “surprising” for a candidate who enjoys dialogue and de-escalation, Gargash said. Adding a hint of irony to the exchange, he also said the Iranian speaker’s remarks could be attributed to his social media team and not the Iranian government.

Nusseibeh’s UN Secretary General Bid Moves Forward

Nusseibeh was nominated on October 21 by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to replace António Guterres, who is set to end his term on December 31, 2026, sources said. Her interactive engagement with the member states of the UN-General Assembly will be held on 27 October, to coincide with its First Committee’s debate on the UN’s future.
