Abu Dhabi Court Sentences Teacher Over Classroom Assault on Four Students
A private school teacher is sentenced to two years in prison for kicking, kicking three and punching four students in a classroom. The decision also will impose court fines on the teacher and a deportation to the UAE upon the end of his prison sentence. The decision further sends a message about the State’s commitment to keeping students safe from violence in schools.
Four Students Suffer Injuries During Lesson
This took place while the teacher was teaching classes at a private school in Abu Dhabi, attacking four students in a classroom. The students were injured and unable to attend school for up to 20 days, preventing them from going about their daily lives normally.
The case had raised a serious concern for the safety of students and the responsibility of the school staff to ensure safety of the school.
CCTV Footage Exposes Classroom Violence
In the course of investigation, and in the context of court proceedings, the teacher said that he had admitted to assaulting the students, but that he had been trying to keep them in line and stop them being disruptive.
But the rosters for that same period of a CCTV showed that his justification was in error. A court found that there was “extreme violence” happening towards students, and that for no lawful reason, it largely bolstered the defendant’s case.
UAE Reaffirms Stance Against School Violence
The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department said that violence in educational institutions is a breach of public order and a danger to public safety. The sentence emphasises the repercussions for teachers if they resort to physical punishment on students.
Educational rules in the UAE ban corporal punishment in schools and teachers are expected to adhere to the adopted disciplinary procedures in the school that do not involve violence. This is an important reminder to ensure that classroom management is about student welfare, dignity and safety.
