How One-ID Systems Streamline School Transfers for Expat Families in the Gulf?
For expat families, moving from one school to another in the Gulf has meant paperwork, transfer certificates, stamped transcripts and multiple ministry approvals. The process is being streamlined more and more with schools adopting digital identity and education platforms to provide faster verification of student data and reduce administrative delays.
What are One-ID Education Systems?
One-ID systems are used to link a student’s identity to the verified government and education documents. Authorised institutions can confirm information electronically in the UAE via platforms and national identity frameworks, like UAE Pass and UAE Emirates ID, and also in Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries with digital education services.
However, across the board there is something changing and this change is toward the digital record of education and not all documents, just some.
Faster Verification of Academic Records
The most advantageous benefits are much quicker access to verified student info. Authorised schools are permitted to rely on a connected web-based system to establish the following relevant information or academic and identity details in lieu of waiting for the physical transcripts.
This can streamline the admissions and transfer process, especially for families moving during the academic term.
Less Paperwork and Attestation
In the past, parents have had to gather documentation and get a number of approvals or attestations to obtain a school transfer. The application and verification can be done digitally, which minimize the need for multiple physical visits in order to deliver government services.
Needs have yet to be defined, however, depending on the country, school, curriculum and student’s context.
Better Continuity of Student Records
Use of digital records helps to ensure continuity when students change schools. Academic history records, attendance information and other verified records can be transferred and can be accessed via authorised systems, minimising the risk of paperwork being lost.
This can make transitions to and from school easier in the case of families with expats who frequently move.
Easier Relocation and Grade Placement
There may be different curricula and division of grades within the GCC countries. Making more records digital means that schools have a better overview of a student’s former school experiences, and this assists them with the evaluation of the documents and placing the student.
Parents are required to retain the original certificates and transcripts, especially when transitioning to another country or curriculum program.
What Expat Parents Should Keep in Mind?
One ID system is not eliminating all the requirements. This does not exclude the possibility that schools will continue to require passports, residence records, transfer certificates, authenticated academic records or academic/curriculum specific records. Parents should ensure that the school they are transferring to requires it before beginning the transfer process.
FAQs
Does this One-ID System get rid of school transfer paperwork?
This can greatly alleviate paperwork and physical verification, though it may be required in some instances, depending on the school and country.
Is a student’s entire academic record contained on the digital ID?
Not necessarily. Digitalised records depend on the country, the education authority and the platforms to which the student is linked.
Does maintaining physical academic records make sense?
Yes. Original certificates, transcripts and other important documents should be kept by parents as they may be needed for some transfers or some attestations.
