Saudi Arabia-Türkiye-Pakistan Defence Pact: What Trump Said and What It Means
King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud and President of Turkey Abdullah Gül signed the Saudi Arabia-Turkey-Pakistan Defense pact on August 7, 2026 in Makkah. It is a significant progress in regional security cooperation. It is a mutual defense pact between three key countries in the Gulf, Middle East and South Asia.
The agreement reflects growing regional powers’ desire for deeper defence partnerships and strategic self-reliance. The agreement establishes a new trilateral security platform, with Saudi Arabia’s economy, the defence industry of Türkiye and Pakistan’s experience in military technology.
What Did Donald Trump Say About the Pact?
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly welcomed the agreement, dubbing it “a big, bold, and important first step.” His remarks emphasised the concept that Middle Eastern nations have to build up their own capabilities for protection and be more actively engaged in regional security.
But Trump’s support is no assurance that the U.S. is on board the deal. That agreement continues to be an autonomous Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan deal, while its favorable feedback from Washington lends greater international importance to the initiative.
What Does the Defence Agreement Include?
An integral part of the pact is the principle of collective defence if one country is attacked, then the others are, too. It is reportedly based on Article 51 of the UN Charter, where people have the right to defend themselves in groups.
In the agreement, there are also provisions for joint military committees and a permanent secretariat in Saudi Arabia. These sites could help the three countries to better coordinate defence, plan more effectively, conduct military exercises or share information.
Why Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan?
The partner countries have different strategic contributions to make to the partnership. Saudi Arabia offers a significant share of financing, energy presence and influence in the Gulf and Türkiye offers a powerful defence industrial base with drones and electronic warfare.
Pakistan brings with it a vast operational experience in the military, training experience, and strategic nuclear capacity. These are all strengths which could combine to provide the alliance with a greater security footprint than a traditional bilateral defence alliance.
Sign of Greater Regional Self-Reliance
The agreement also comes as part of a trend of defence diversification. Gulf and regional countries are diversifying their relations with multiple strategic partners over and above relying on any single external power.
With improved coordination, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan have other options when facing regional crises. The intention of the agreement was to enhance their capabilities to act together to face new security issues.
Could Other Countries Join?
The three founding members will be able to expand the framework in the future. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that the pact is defensive, and that it could be extended to other nations, with Egypt being one example.
Any expansion would, however, have a heavy geopolitical impact on the pact’s value and might change security dynamics in the larger Middle East.
