His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum reviewed a study on Al Khuzam, a traditional Emirati craft. The topic covers its historical origins and cultural development, as well as its present-day significance. The project, which is multi disciplinary, was supervised by the Development Office.

The report studied the traditional craft in depth in an attempt to document not only the physical attributes of the artifacts but also their meaning and use through time. The study combined historical research with traditional handcraft, cultural heritage and modern design, highlighting the continuity of this ancient Emirati tradition.

Al Khuzam’s Journey From Function to Symbol

The study concluded three major stages in the evolution of Al Khuzam. Originally it was a practical item for camel control and desert travel, then part of local clothing and lifestyle.

Today, Al Khuzam has become a unique cultural symbol of Emirati identity. The project also finds historical evidence from across the Arab world and traces references to Al Khuzam in Arabic poetry related to camels, travel, leadership, strength and resilience.

Preserving Traditional Craftsmanship

The study also investigates the conventional approach to Al Khuzam manufacture. This technique involves wool or camel hair harvesting, spinning into thin yarns, braiding into thick ropes, and adding knots, rings, and silver chains.

Emiratis are playing an active role in preserving traditional techniques and transferring their know-how to the next generations. The project portrays the craft as an ecosystem of materials, skills, knowledge, techniques and the human stories behind its production.

From Heritage Craft to Modern Design

One important aspect of the initiative is to try and bring Al Khuzam into modern life. Emirati designers and entrepreneurs have created products inspired by its distinctive threads, rings and visual details.

The project incorporates creative work and design ideas that combine traditional character with contemporary applications. The approach is to retain Al Khuzam’s identity and expand its footprint with contemporary products and creative industries.
