The iconic Gulf Cinemas located in the capital city of Doha, Qatar is going to open its doors again for the public in a short period of time.
The place is having a restoration and is expected to attract throngs of crowds after everything is complete. According to sources, besides restoring the old building, plans are underway for a 360 degree revival of this historic part of Doha’s cultural heritage along with addition of the latest cutting edge tech used in the entertainment industry giving it a touch of fusion look.
The Gulf Cinema was the first of its kind that was opened in the year 1972 for giving a theatre experience to the locals during that time. It became a cultural landmark of Doha that was a bustling fishing town back then, where both locals and expats gathered to enjoy movies on the silver screen.
Gulf Cinemas to come alive again
Qatar museums signed a MoU with Qatar Cinemas and Film Distribution Company to give the historic complex a boost so that it can spread its wings and fly again.
The plan is to transform the iconic movie theatre into a state of the art entertainment complex while preserving its historical essence. Its going to be a fusion of old and new. While the exterior would be preserved as it is showing the building’s historical, cultural and social significance, the inside, however, it’s going to be a whole new world giving a modern cinematic experience.
The revamped Gulf Cinema will feature Qatar’s first-ever Cinematique Museum, including studio spaces, a media and film library, a grand theatre and even food and beverage venues. It’s going to become a one-stop-shop for film enthusiasts and casual moviegoers alike.
The Doha Film Institute will play a crucial role in bringing their expertise to ensure the project’s success, while Qatar Museums will oversee the display of its unique film collections.
As of now no details are there as to when the restoration work will start, but if you’re an old-timer who remembers the original Gulf Cinema or a newcomer curious about Doha’s entertainment zone, keep a lookout at this landmark on a frequent basis.
