Mediator Qatar’s foreign ministry confirmed on Tuesday that discussions aimed at cementing a Gaza ceasefire agreement are ongoing and that both Israel and Hamas are part of “technical meetings” happening at the moment.
There are no principal meetings currently happening, the ministry spokesperson said. Mediators Qatar, Egypt and the US are part of long and meticulous discussions to find an end to the brutal Israel-Hamas fighting raging in the territory for a long time.
The spokesperson highlighted that a lot of issues are being discussed in the ongoing technical meetings, but declined to go into details of the discussions in order to “protect the integrity of the negotiations.”
In December, Qatar expressed optimism about returning momentum to the discussions after former US President Donald Trump got reelected in federal elections. Just a month earlier, it said it’s putting its mediation on hold, asking both sides for “seriousness”.
