east west pipeline capacity restored

Restoring the operational capacity of the strategic pipeline between the East-West segment of Saudi Arabia to 5.8 million bpd represents a significant development to support energy infrastructure, announced the Minister of Energy.

The estimated length of the pipeline is 1200 km or 750 miles and conveys crude oil from the eastern crude oil production zones of Saudi Arabia to export terminals on the Red Sea. With its regained capacity it makes Saudi Arabia more flexible to ship crude to markets overseas.

The capacity upgrade is especially important because the pipeline presents an export alternative that may result in decreased reliance on seaborne exports via regional choke points. Petroline will boost Saudi crude supply’s resilience by linking eastern petrol to Red Sea ports.

In recent years, infrastructural development has been prioritized mainly to improve technical conditions and modernize pumping stations and equipment to enhance the operational reliability and efficiency. The improved system is poised to ensure the stability of crude movement in addition to bolstering the Kingdom’s potential response to future disruptions.

The news follows wider concerns around energy markets over regional security threats and supply-chain fragilities. Thus, the increased capability of this pipeline could provide increased flexibility for Saudi Arabia in crude exports and for international requirements for crude oil supply.

The East-West Pipeline is still an important element in Saudi Arabia’s energy policy of adding 5.8 million bpd to the circulation. It is also an important pathway between energy exporting terminals on the Red Sea and oil fields of the eastern region underlining the need for diversification of energy transport routes for global energy security.
