Sharjah beach closures

Public beaches in Sharjah have been shut around the city due to an oil spill off the coast in the city, and authorities cautioned residents and tourists not to enter the coastal areas deemed restricted for the time being.

On October 28, 2026, the Sharjah Government Media Bureau made the announcement of the precautionary measure, which comes as part of environmental (EE) efforts to reduce marine pollution and conserve the coastline.

Sharjah Beaches Closed Following Oil Spill

The state’s extensions on the closure come after previous closures that were implemented at Al Hamriyah Beach on October 23 and Dibba Al Hisn beach on October 27. Authorities have implemented precautionary measures on all public beaches in the city of Sharjah due to the possibility of floating oil spills polluting the local sea that will impact the marine ecosystem.

Oil Spill Response Operations Underway

Specialised marine pollution response teams are rolling out containment booms, skimmers and coastal barriers to help contain the oil. Coordinating with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the local civil defence and environmental protection authorities to observe the situation and protect coastal facilities etc. are involved in these operations.

Northern Emirates Introduce Beach Restrictions

Strategies are not just being implemented in Sharjah, as on October 23 the public beaches in Umm Al Quwain were closed followed by those in Ras Al Khaimah on October 24. Excitation over offshore oil slicks and their potential impacts on neighbouring ocean coastlines account for the regional response. Environmental monitoring is a key component of containment.

Public Urged to Follow Beach Safety Advisories

All beach users from residents to those heading to the beaches for swimming to the fishermen are advised to take their instructions from officialdom and not venture into restricted areas of the beach.

The authorities have also responded to reports of foul smells in certain areas Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain describing the smell as fuel instead of inputting verified data and warning people not to rumour monger.
