What Is Digger About?

The official synopsis calls Digger a “comedy of catastrophic proportions.

In this movie, Tom Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell, a crazy billionaire whose oil company triggers a cataclysmic land conservation crisis when it destabilizes a Greenland glacier. The resulting crisis turns into an estimated $18 trillion worldwide catastrophe that could prove to be devastating to international security and political stability.

But, instead of owning up to his mistake, Digger embarks on a more and more frenzied effort to win the world over to his cause, the mere message of which being enough to make him humanity’s savior. His reckless efforts to right the wrongs both to the environment and to his reputation are the backbone of the film’s satirical storyline.

Meet the Star-Studded Cast

Tom Cruise isn’t the only person in Digger’s ensemble to have a strong group of peers. Riz Ahmed (Oscar winner), who plays Aung Sang Suu Kyi, is joined by U.S. President John Goodman in the movie.

It features Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg, Emma D’Arcy, Sophie Wilde, Burn Gorman, Robert John Burke as well. This lineup of celebrities from the old school and notably good-time from their respective countries has already sparked awards-season buzz.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu Returns Behind the Camera

The fun at Digger is largely because of its creative team. The Oscar-winning Birdman helmsman Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who wrote the script with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone.

Known for his past impressive work on such films as Baby Driver, Birdman, and The Revenant, which earned him an impressive three Academy Award nominations, Lubezki is art director behind the scenes of the film.

Filmed in all Vista Vision, the format used to capture images as large as possible, the production features the visual result of Oscar-worthy props and set design master Kazu Hiro’s work on transforming Tom Cruise’s physique in costume for the role.

Why Digger Is Already Generating Awards Buzz?

Tom Cruise has faced incredible fame for his action roles, such as those in Mission: Impossible and Top Gun, but he’s in totally new territory with Digger.

His performance as a wacky billionaire dealing with his comedic aspects, political commentary and breakdown has already been a debate for being awarded. The timely topics of climate change, corporate responsibility, and media manipulation, the film’s themes, combined with the way it’s being made, makes Digger a hit that’s expected to be a talking point of 2026.
