Kuwait Makes Roads Safer with New Rules and Smart Cameras

There were indications that the number of people killed in traffic accidents compare favorably with the one recorded the previous year. For 2024, road accidents claimed 284 people while in 2023, 296 people died on the roads. The country has started to use smart cameras for identifying dangerous drivers. These cameras will help to identify people who are using phones while driving, or not wearing seat belts. The new cameras recorded that in 15 days 18,193 individuals violated road laws, and 4,885 of them were using mobile phones while driving.

In Kuwait new rules in regard to drivers will be set in March. Those found using the phone while driving will be much heavier by paying KD70- KD75 rather than KD5. Failure in putting on a seat belt will attract KD 30, three times more than before.

The greatest penalty is for running of red lights – the driver faces up to three years imprisonment and or a fine of up to KD 1,000. While traffic accidents are the second highest cause of death in Kuwait next to heart diseases the emirate requires these stricter rules.
