Soccer icon Cristiano Ronaldo joins WHOOP as investor and global ambassador

Portuguese soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo likes to check out his body inside and out to stay at the top of his game. He has taken on an investor and global ambassador role at WHOOP, a leading tech provider based in Boston, the US.

Ronaldo and the firm’s chief executive Will Ahmed announced the partnership in an Instagram Live video on Monday morning. The terms of the investment have not been disclosed but the deal potentially represents one of the player’s “most significant investments to date“.

WHOOP provides one of the most advanced fitness and health wearables on the market today to help its customers monitor their sleep, strain, recovery and health. “No other wearable gives you a more comprehensive look at your body’s key performance,” the firm claims.

Determination to perform at the highest possible level

Set to partner on product development initiatives, the 39-year-old joins a list of athlete investors or ambassadors that includes Patrick Mahomes, Eli Manning and Michael Phelps. The firm is simultaneously expanding its operations across the globe.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s investment in the burgeoning tech provider is an obvious choice as his success is built on his determination to perform at the highest possible level. He has been a WHOOP member for a number of years, according to CEO Ahmed.

Taking to X on Monday, the entrepreneur noted: “[Cristiano Ronaldo] has been wearing the product for the last two years to improve his performance and I’m pumped to have him as a partner as we expand globally. Let’s go @Cristiano.”

“Greatness is the Goal”: Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo made an announcement the same day on Instagram to his 629 million followers, noting: “Greatness is the Goal … To stay at the top of your game, it takes knowing your body inside and out. I have been wearing @whoop for years to help me perform at my best …”

The player was the highest scorer globally in 2023 and is currently the top scorer with 47 goals in 44 matches in the Saudi Pro League. He joined Saudi’s al-Nassr in 2023 on a $75 million-a-year contract as a free agent after terminating his contract at Manchester United.

Ronaldo’s 20+-year European career kicked off in Portugal’s Sporting CP and continued in the Premier League’s Manchester United, La Liga’s Real Madrid and Serie A’s Juventus. Internationally, he started playing for Portugal in 2003.
