After the conclusion of Spider-Man’s tenure as Peter Parker, Tom Holland has hinted that Marvel and Sony Pictures have been quietly planning for the future of Spider-Man. In an interview with Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor confirmed that he had conversations with others about who will replace him immediately after the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.

But, the comments have sparked some excitement within the Marvel fandom community, with some seeing a potentially well-thought-out transition versus the potential abrupt recasting of one of the most beloved superheroes in cinema history.

Marvel and Sony Have Been Planning Ahead

Holland says both studios have some steps that they’re charting for Spider-Man’s future. Though details could change as time went on, he said there was already a clear plan outlined on how to hand over the torch to the next generation of heroes.

The actor said that it wasn’t a new decision to make plans for the franchise’s future. Rather, “Spider-Man” has been a part of an on-going series of discussions ever since production concluded earlier on Duck’s debut “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” allowing continuity for one of Marvel’s most popular series.

New Era Begins with Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Holland also revealed that he would like to assist the next Spider-Man actor to the extent that Robert Downey Jr. helped him when he first appeared in the MCU in Captain America: Civil War.

He singled out Downey’s guidance over his career as a great advantage to himself and wished that whoever was next in charge of the iconic role may have that benefit as well.

Growing Spider-Man Universe

Sony is continuing to explore other avenues of Spider-Man with several films planned for the future such as Spider-Noir and a popular line of animated movies, called the Spider-Man franchise. “Each of those parallel stories is actually something to be commended here; it’s something that not only enriches but fortifies the overall Spider-Man universe,” Holland said.

With this multi-platform approach, they can see their Spider-Man in a few different forms, all the while refreshing the franchise for future generations.
