Bahrain Demands Iran End Regional Hostilities at UN Security Council

Bahrain urged Iran to stop its staunch opposition to countries in the Gulf region by outright halting acts of hostility in New York at a UN Security Council meeting attended by Bahrain’s ambassador to the UN Dr. Mohammed Al-Saud.

In the course of his address delivered to the Council, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Dr. Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, encouraged Tehran to abide by international law, acknowledge the sovereignty of other countries around the region, and ensure full implementation of various UNSC resolutions.

This comes on the heels of continued concerns about regional security, maritime stability, and the continued effect of cross-border tensions on international trade and energy markets.

Bahrain Calls for an End to Hostilities

Ambassador Alrowaiei told the Security Council that the events directly or indirectly perpetrated by those groups pose risks to regional peace and undermine the UN Charter’s principles. He demanded immediate cessation of drone and missile attacks on GCC and other regional countries as well as cross-border attacks.

Bahrain noted the importance of agents of respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity to stave off further escalation and sustain stability across the Middle East.

Emphasis on UN Security Council Resolutions

One of Bahrain’s primary considerations has been the urgent need to enhance the enforcement of the various Security Council resolutions. In addition to traditional security threats, Bahrain voiced emerging challenges in technology and finance security. Ambassador Alrowaiei added to his concern the competition which has been clearly reflected on the recent developments of the cryptocurrencies sector from the unauthorized users to its use in funding illegal activities or evading the traditional financial monitoring regime.

He also mentioned the rising phenomenon of online radicalization, and how extremist groups are leveraging social media and algorithmic suggestions to recruit vulnerable people, especially children. Bahrain requested digital platforms to take action and cooperate more closely to limit such threats.

Bahrain Reaffirms Support for Diplomacy

Although the outlook of Bahrain’s stance on issues affecting regional security was strong, it reiterated the nation’s commitment towards diplomacy, peaceful coexistence and cooperation with the international community. The Kingdom called on the Security Council to improve its existing collective mechanisms in order to foster dialogue and adherence to international law and to avoid further destabilisation in the Gulf.

The officials emphasized the need to honor international commitments and promote positive interaction among regional players for lasting peace.
