UAE’s deepening focus on strategic decision-making and economic transformation
The Arctic region is gradually undergoing natural and geopolitical transformation. The UAE is seeking a bigger presence in regions traditionally dominated by other countries such as Russia and the US. The Gulf state‘s diplomatic efforts are going to help.
Strategic decision-making is part of UAE’s long-term planning and foreign policy. In recent years, the UAE has been increasing its engagement ith Arctic nations by investing in different Arctic-related ventures.
UAE has become a key player on the global stage
The UAE’s status as a logistics and trade/financial hub, accompanied by its flexible foreign policy, enables the country to extend its influence beyond its immediate region. Using its unique financial diplomacy, the UAE has become a key player on the global stage.
Traditionally, the UAE has had no presence in regions like the Arctic. By becoming an actor in the region’s infrastructure projects, research projects and sustainability efforts, the GCC nation is significantly enhancing its global standing.
Russia has long been a central actor in the Arctic, controlling the Northern Sea Route, a prominent shipping lane that is becoming increasingly viable as ice melts due to the climate crisis. The UAE could help address Russia’s need for foreign funding.
The UAE’s approach is sort of strategic compartmentalisation. Being a maritime nation and global maritime hub, the UAE’s interest in the resource-rich region centres around funding in critical infrastructure such as ports and shipping routes.
Goals of economic transformation and sustainability
The UAE and Oslo are gradually expanding their bilateral relationship. The latter is a Nato member state and enjoys interesting technology and logistics industries. The UAE is also relying on Oslo in an effort to reduce dependence on any single country.
Keeping its long-term goals of economic transformation and sustainability, the UAE is expanding its influence in burgeoning sectors such as green shipping, critical minerals mining, and defence and space projects.
