Taqah Travel Guide 2026: What to Do in Dhofar Beyond the Waterfalls

Taqah is one of the better off destinations of Dhofar for people who are looking for more than Khareef waterfalls around 33 kilometres east of Salalah. Its archaeological site, historic buildings, dramatic coastlines, unusual landscapes and mountain scenery make it an ideal base for exploring southern Oman.

Unlike Wadi Darbat, which is famous for its seasonal vegetation and waterfalls, Taqah has a different Dhofar face; one that has been formed through frankincense trading, fishing traditions, geological features and unique landscapes.

Explore Ancient Sumhuram

Sumhuram Archaeological Park at Khor Rori, a part of the Land of Frankincense heritage of Oman, is one of Taqah’s major attractions. The ancient fortified settlement is of antiquity and was once an important port of the frankincense trade.

It is a place where people can see its stone wall, archaeological remains, inscriptions and museum exhibits, and have a view of the neighboring lagoon where migratory birds can be seen.

Visit Taqah Castle

In town, Taqah Castle provides a personal experience of Dhofari culture. There are traditional household items, weapons, jewelry and restored rooms within the historic building, which depict coastal life in the past.

The surrounding historic sites, such as old houses and high points, enrich the travel experience and offer superb photo opportunities.

Chase Coastal Views and Baobabs

The Taqah Cliff Plateau delivers spectacular views over the Arabian Sea. Mist and ocean spray give Khareef a dramatic ambiance, and clearer months provide wide vistas of the coast.

The nature enthusiasts will also have another rare treat in Wadi Hinna: the vast baobab trees, amongst some of the great big ones in the world. The area is very memorable due to its surrounding landscape.

Tawi Atayr and Jabal Samhan

The Adventure seekers can head inland towards the dramatic natural sinkhole called Tawi Atayr and the raised plateau of Jabal Samhan. Cloud and mist can make Khareef a mountain perspective over the coast.

Planning of these excursions should be done carefully, taking into account suitable transport and conditions in the area, especially on mountain tracks.

When Should You Visit?

The Khareef season from June to September is a cool season with mist, green foliage and outdoor attractions during this period. October to March are the best months for archaeological exploration, views and beaches, due to the clearer skies and warmer coastal waters.

Generally, it’s fine to rent a standard vehicle for the main attractions around Taqah, but a 4WD is recommended for further mountain and wadi exploring.
