Sheikh Hamdan inaugurates Dubai Reef sustainable initiative in landmark move

HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, has inaugurated the Dubai Reef project, a landmark sustainable initiative by Dubai Can, with the launch of pilot reef modules.

Dubai Reef is the largest marine reef development project on the planet and highlights the emirate’s efforts to promote ecological sustainability. It is working around an objective to deploy 20,000 purpose-built reef modules of different sizes over four years.

The project is a massive collaboration uniting key partners in Dubai to support the strategic goals and ambitions of the city and the nation, including the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategy and the UAE’s Green Agenda – 2030.

Sheikh Hamdan said: “Reef ecosystems are unique life sources and vital components in the protection of marine life. Dubai Can’s Dubai Reef project will inject vitality into our coastal waters and contribute to global conservation efforts.”

The initiative’s significant long-term environmental and socio-economic impacts can help serve the UAE’s commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for all. The Gulf state is prominent across the globe for its deepening focus on climate action.

Expo City Dubai hosted the COP28 Summit last November, convening participants from hundreds of countries. The climate conference achieved numerous milestones, including the operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund to compensate vulnerable countries.

The Summit also reached the landmark UAE Consensus that calls for a transition away from fossil fuels. The annual event underscored the pressing need to tackle climate change as global temperatures surpass unprecedented limits and disastrous events kill many.
