In a bid to combine faith with sustainability, Qatar has launched a pilot project that aims to turn mosques into green buildings. Led by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, the project was announced on June 24, 2025, to promote energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and better utilization of resources within houses of worship.
The project is part of Qatar’s larger environmental vision and contributes to global sustainable development goals. The focus will be on minimizing the carbon footprint of mosques by providing energy-saving lighting, smart water systems, green materials, and efficient air conditioning options.
Officials stated that, along with protecting energy, green mosques will also make the worshipping experience both more comfortable and spiritually uplifting. They are also looking to promote environmental awareness and improve the experience in houses of worship.
The pilot will start with a small sample of mosques in different regions. Depending on the results, the project could go nationwide. Awqaf went on to emphasize this initiative as a manifestation of Qatar’s commitment to integrating modern sustainability with traditional values.
The green mosque model is seen as a guide for other Muslim-majority countries looking to incorporate environmental stewardship within religious infrastructure.
Whether these are small steps or giant leaps for Qatar resulting from this pilot project toward a more sustainable future remains to be seen. There is certainly a long road ahead; however, where better to start than your greatest assets?
