Qatar has appointed Luis Garcia Fernández, former coach of Espanyol Barcelona, as the head coach of its national football team. He had been playing the role of head assistant coach under Spaniard Tintin Marquez since December 2023.

Garcia’s appointment is a significant step up in his professional career, after coaching a number of Spanish clubs such as Damm, Espanyol and Internacional FC. The Spaniard has expressed his gratitude to both Qatar and coach Marquez for the opportunity.

Born on February 6, 1981, Luis Garcia Fernández is a prominent Spanish former professional footballer. In a total of 9 seasons, he has amassed La Liga totals of 329 matches and 73 goals, especially for Espanyol. He earned 7 caps for Spain in the 2000s.

Through his recent appointment, Garcia is going to lead the Qatar football team in the upcoming 26th Gulf Cup Championship, starting on December 21. The organising committee for the tournament has announced that training stadiums are being prepared.
